6146 Material Handling Equipment - Non-Emission (Battery Operated or Manually Propelled) Equipment (Tunnel Vehicles) | |
Purpose
Jefferson Lab requires a variety of material handling equipment to perform various operations. ES&H Manual Chapter 6140 Material Handling Equipment Program provides Jefferson Lab's minimum requirements for training; inspection and maintenance, procurement, and access for all material handling equipment. Additionally, only non-emission (e.g., battery operated or manually propelled) equipment is authorized for use within the accelerator enclosure (tunnel). This chapter, and its associated appendix, provides additional requirements related to this type of equipment when used within the restricted tunnel area. These items include:
Scope Due to the unique hazard issues encountered within the tunnel, material handling equipment is limited to equipment which does not produce noxious emissions. Qualified Material Handling Equipment Operators do not need to comply with the additional restrictions imposed by this chapter, and its associated appendix, when non-emission or manually propelled equipment is used outside the tunnel area.

T1 Authorized Use of Tunnel Vehicles
Only Material Handling Equipment that does not produce noxious emissions (battery operated or manually powered) is authorized for use within the accelerator enclosure (tunnel). ES&H Manual Chapter 6146 Appendix T1 Authorized Use of Tunnel Vehicles defines the minimum requirements needed to authorize the use of this type of equipment in the tunnel, the additional activities required when it is used, and how to store/recharge it safely.
