Colloquium: First Images of a Black Hole
Abstract: Does a black hole appear as a literal dark object in the Universe if we can photograph it? This question has just been addressed by observing the supermassive black hole lurking at the center of the nearby galaxy M87 with the Event Horizon Telescope. This talk will give an overview of the first images of a black hole photographed by the EHT, with a modest focus on imaging efforts and process.
Bio: Kazu Akiyama, a Jansky Fellow at the MIT Haystack Observatory, joined the Event Horizon Telescope in 2010, completed his Ph.D. in 2015 from the University of Tokyo under the supervision of Mareki Honma and was previously a Japan Society for the Promotion of Science fellow at the Haystack Observatory until 2017. He co-leads the EHT Imaging Working Group and has developed new imaging techniques and software packages used to create the first-ever images of a black hole. He is also involved in proposing EHT observations and various data processing work including calibration, imaging, modeling analysis and physical interpretation after correlations.
