You’re invited to share your love of science with us at our 40th anniversary open house

NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Come share your love of science with us! The U.S. Department of Energy's Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility is opening its doors to the public for an open house event on June 8. This free event is open to all and is a rare opportunity for the public to see inside this amazing facility, where groundbreaking research, technology R&D and innovation is happening every day.

Come see what’s new at the Commonwealth of Virginia’s national lab! The theme for this year’s event is Virginia is for Science Lovers®. Find a new love for science as you discover how scientists are visualizing the proton, watch new experimental detector systems come together, and see how the lab is helping to build the world’s next high-powered particle collider for research.

Come share your curiosity with us as you explore our 180-acre campus and dozens of unique, thought-provoking exhibits. Family favorite activities are back: Visitors can team up to operate an accelerator, see how nuclear physics experiments work in 3D, check out what’s happening now in scientific data gathering and data science, and tinker with magnets.

Come celebrate our 40th Anniversary with us! Jefferson lab was founded August 3, 1984. It has grown from a handful of buildings and a few dozen employees to a fully developed 170+ acre site with more than 800 employees and 1,000 people on-site daily. At the open house, view highlights from our 40-year history and learn how our archives is ensuring our history remains accessible by transferring old media to new.

Come engage with our research and education partners and other organizations in our community. The event will also feature displays from local science centers and community organizations, leading technology innovators, and university physics departments.

Come early and stay all day! Free parking opens at 8:30 a.m. at Canon Virginia, located at 12000 Canon Blvd. in Newport News. The event starts at 9 a.m. and ends at 3 p.m. The event will also feature local food vendors at locations across the site for visitors’ convenience. As you approach parking, be sure to remain alert for Newport News traffic direction and drive cautiously near busy sidewalks.

Visitors may tour the campus at their own pace, visiting just one or all of the exhibits on their wish list. The event will offer shuttle buses to help our visitors enjoy all the event has to offer. Check out the event website for developing details on exhibits and a head start on planning your visit. Access the event website at: https://www.jlab.org/openhouse.
