Media Advisory: Poster Session Highlights Projects, Research Carried Out by Summer Interns at Jefferson Lab

Date: Friday, Aug. 1, 2014

Time: 11:45 a.m. – 1 p.m.

Place: The CEBAF Center lobby at Jefferson Lab, 12000 Jefferson Avenue, Newport News, VA 23606

Event:  More than 40 high school students and college undergraduates who participated in summer science internship programs at the Department of Energy’s Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility, or Jefferson Lab, will share with invited guests and members of the lab community results from their respective summer research projects during a poster session. The poster session brings to a close a highly successful summer intern session designed to promote science and energy. The DOE’s national laboratories provide a unique opportunity for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) workforce development by offering access to leading scientists, world-class scientific user facilities and instrumentation, and large-scale, multidisciplinary research programs. News Media representatives are invited to attend.

Participants in this summer's poster session include:

- Eleven (11) Hampton Roads-area high school students who participated in Jefferson Lab's High School Summer Honors Internship Program. The students are pursuing college preparatory programs and intend to major in various scientific fields in college.

- Thirty-one (31) college students, who took part in the Department of Energy's Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internship program, funded by Workforce Development for Teachers and Scientists, and the National Science Foundation-funded Old Dominion University/Jefferson Lab Research Experiences for Undergraduates accelerator and nuclear physics program. Both programs are geared toward undergraduates who are pursuing careers in science or technology.

Many of these individuals are from the Newport News area and Virginia. Their respective summer projects directly involved them in the culture, activities and science of a U.S. Department of Energy national laboratory. Project topics ranged from accelerator and nuclear physics science and experimental research to engineering, industrial hygiene and safety, computer programming and facilities management.
