Event: Poster session to highlight the projects and research carried out by the college undergraduates who participated in summer, science internship programs at the Department of Energy’s Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. The interns will be available to discuss their work with attendees – the news media, invited guests and members of the lab community. DOE national laboratories provide a unique opportunity for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) workforce development by offering access to leading scientists, world-class research facilities and instrumentation, and large-scale, multidisciplinary research programs.

Participants in this summer's poster session include:
- Fourteen college students, taking part in the DOE Office of Science’s Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internship (SULI) program. The SULI program encourages undergraduate students to pursue STEM careers by providing research experiences at DOE laboratories. They perform research, under the guidance of laboratory staff scientists or engineers, on projects supporting the DOE mission.
- Ten college students participating in the National Science Foundation-funded Old Dominion University/Jefferson Lab Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) accelerator and nuclear physics program. The REU program supports active research participation by undergraduate students in any of the areas of research funded by the National Science Foundation. REU projects involve students in meaningful ways in ongoing research programs or in research projects specifically designed for the REU program.
Many of these individuals are from the Newport News area and Virginia. Their respective summer projects directly involved them in the culture, activities and science of a U.S. Department of Energy national laboratory. Project topics ranged from accelerator and nuclear physics science and experimental research to engineering and other STEM fields.
