Virginia Region II teachers are invited to register for science fair educator event

NEWPORT NEWS, VA - The U.S. Department of Energy's Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility invites elementary and middle school science teachers to register for its annual science fair for teachers on Wednesday, April 17, 2024. The free program offers educators the opportunity to explore hands-on, science-themed classroom activities developed by their peers.

"We're excited to host this science event for teachers in person again this year at a convenient after-school time," said Lisa Surles-Law, Jefferson Lab Science Education team lead.

The event will feature Jefferson Lab Science Activities for Teachers (JSAT) Program participants presenting over 50 creative, classroom-tested activities covering concepts like atomic theory, renewable energy, the water cycle, and more. All educational activities are tailored for upper elementary and middle school grade levels.

Attendees will be able to try out these innovative physical science activities and receive handouts to easily implement the lessons in their own classrooms. Participants can also expect to leave with these new resources ready to go.

"The creativity and excitement of our presenter-teachers is outstanding," said Surles-Law. "This interactive event allows educators to discover fresh, teacher-approved ways to engage students in science from those facing similar classroom experiences."

In addition to the hands-on activities and handouts, attendees can earn continuing education credits and enter prize drawings. The exhibits and meetups run from 6:30-8 p.m.

"In-person collaboration fosters creativity and reinvigorates passion for teaching science," Surles-Law added. "Our goal is to empower more science educators with innovative tools to spark their students' curiosity."

Teacher Night is an excellent opportunity for collaboration. It provides interested teachers insight into the JSAT Program before registration opens for the 2024-2025 school year.

Free registration is required as space is limited. Interested educators can find more details at this link to register for Teacher Night and on the Jefferson Lab website.
