Jefferson Lab invites the public to come and explore our world-class research facility during our 2012 Open House: Passport to Science, which will be held on Saturday, May 19 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. - rain or shine.
Numerous exhibits, demonstrations, tours and hands-on activities will be available, providing a day of fun and education for the entire family.
Admission is free and so is parking. Photos and videotaping are welcome.
During your visit, you will learn about: superconducting materials, supercomputers, particle accelerators, lasers, nuclear physics research and much more. Other Hampton Roads companies and organizations also will provide demonstrations.
Be sure to check this page frequently for programming updates and new information, including details about parking.
Please plan to arrive early.
Open House ends at 3 p.m., but parking will close at 2 p.m. and no admittance will be allowed after that time.

Before you arrive

There is a lot to see and do at the Jefferson Lab Open House. Some simple preparations will help you make the most of your Open House experience.
- Learn about Jefferson Lab. The quickest way to do this is to watch the 12-minute video below.
- Review the Open House map. Check back for a map of the site, and information about tour stops. Try to decide which Jefferson Lab facilities you most want to visit. There might not be enough time to see everything.
- Dress comfortably. The Open House tours involve extended periods of walking, and many tour stops include stairs. Much of the event is outdoors, so check the weather on May 19 and dress appropriately. We suggest sunscreen and flat, closed-toe shoes.

Free shuttle buses will be provided to every tour stop, and they will continuously loop the Jefferson Lab campus and parking lots. Estimated wait times are 5 – 10 minutes.You can walk the entire tour route; it is approximately a 2 mile loop.
For your safety:
Jefferson Lab is dedicated to safety in all our activities. Observance of a few rules and safety precautions will make the 2012 Open House more enjoyable for everyone:Jefferson Lab hosts will be present to respond to any needs or questions.
In case of serious illness, injury or vehicle accident, our medical staff and Newport News emergency medical crews will be on site.
Proper footwear and clothing is essential. Jefferson Lab is spread over a 206-acre campus, and those taking tours will be required to use stairs and walk some distances. Low-heeled, closed-toe shoes are recommended.

CEBAF Center - This is the place for hands-on science activities.
Watch Liquid Nitrogen Demonstrations in the auditorium every hour on the hour from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. Designed for children ages 6 – 12, but appropriate for kids of all ages.
Also, you can tour our data center and visit with Jefferson Lab staff representing Technology Transfer, Medical Imaging and the Applied Research Center Labs.
TED & Test Lab - Learn about the lab’s sustainability efforts as you stroll through the lab’s newest LEED-designed building, Technology and Engineering Development, or TED, building.
The Test Lab is where Jefferson Lab conducts world-leading research & development for accelerator components. Be among the first to see the new Test Lab expansion.
Machine Control Center - Visit the nerve center for the lab’s Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF), where operators run the machine. Learn how we generate electrons and how these innovations enable new research at Jefferson Lab and other places.

2:00 p.m.: Radiation at Jefferson LabHall A - Descend underground through the truck ramp andview the 1500-short-ton detector systems used to study nuclear interactions in Hall A.
Accelerator Tunnel - Venture 25 feet underground to see six-ton, 27-foot long cryomodules and two-ton electric magnets used to speed and turn the electron beam. There are two identical tour routes. Tunnel North is self-paced with accelerator system experts available to answer questions. Tunnel South is a 20-minute guided tour for up to 20 people.
Central Helium Liquefier (CHL) - Take a peek inside our accelerator’s refrigeration plant, and see the 38’, 100,000 lb cold boxes recently installed for upgraded operations.
Free-Electron Laser (FEL) - Tour the world's most-powerful tunable laser and learn about its applications in medical research, micromachining and the search for dark matter.
Hall D - Visit the Lab’s newest experimental hall and learn how research here may help answer the question: Why is one quark never seen alone?
To tour the entire site takes approximately 4 hours.
Children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.

Parking and Directions
-
Event parking lots are located on the Jefferson Lab campus and the adjacent Newport News Public School System S.C.O.T. lot on Hogan Drive. Access event parking lots from the intersection of Hogan Drive and Jefferson Avenue. This is the only access point. Staff will direct you to event parking.
Individuals under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Bags, backpacks and IDs will be checked by security officers prior to entry to the event.

What to Bring
Bring your camera. Wear sturdy, comfortable walking shoes, and sunscreen and sun glasses or a rimmed hat and protective clothing (a long-sleeved shirt to keep sun off).Not Permitted
