  • NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Eighteen teams arrived at Jefferson Lab bright and early and ready to compete in the Virginia Regional High School Science Bowl on Feb. 6.

    At the end of the day, Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology (TJHSST), Alexandria, prevailed and will represent Virginia at the Department of Energy’s National Science Bowl® (NSB) Finals to be held in Washington, D.C., April 28-May 2.

  • NEWPORT NEWS, Va. –  The Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility will conduct the monthly test of its tornado warning siren at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 5. Depending on weather conditions at the time of the test, the siren could be heard by anyone within a 1.5-mile radius of the lab.

    The test will be carried out over a period that could last up to three minutes. The test will be of the wavering tone (also called high-low-high or 10-4-10).

  • You will recall that in the fall of 2015, I wrote a Montage about the intent to develop an Integrated Diversity and Inclusion program. The Diversity and Inclusion Council, under Chairpersons Mary Logue and Rolf Ent, has been working in collaboration with the Public Affairs office on several initiatives, which will soon go public. One of the very interesting but pernicious effects which, to a greater or lesser degree, we all are susceptible to is implicit bias. We are also looking to provide training for supervisors and also to enhance the information provided to people involved in the hiring process, which would include cultural context, gender communications, as well as implicit bias.

  • NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Some of the brightest young minds in the Commonwealth will meet at the U.S. Department of Energy's Jefferson Lab on February 6, to compete at the Virginia Regional High School Science Bowl for a place in the National Science Bowl® finals. Teams from 19 schools are registered for this year's competition.

  • NEWPORT NEWS, VA. - The Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility hosts its next Science Series lecture on Tuesday, Feb. 9, with a talk by Chad Orzel, a physics professor and author of popular science books and blogs.

    His books, “How to Teach Physics to Your Dog” and “How to Teach Relativity to Your Dog” explain modern physics through imaginary conversations with his German shepherd, Emmy. His most recent book, “Eureka: Discovering Your Inner Scientist”, explains how we use the process of science in everyday activities.

  • NEWPORT NEWS, VA. -- Several hundred young women – from across the country – will gather Jan. 15-17 to learn about many career and research opportunities available in fields associated with physics. They will be attending one of nine regional events, dubbed the Conferences for Undergraduate Women in Physics (CUWiP), taking place from Virginia to California and from New York to Texas.

  • NEWPORT NEWS, VA. – The newly upgraded accelerator at the U.S. Department of Energy's Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility has delivered full-energy electrons as part of commissioning activities for the ongoing 12 GeV Upgrade project. At 4:20 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 14, operators of the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF) delivered the first batch of 12 GeV electrons (12.065 GeV) to its newest experimental hall complex, Hall D.

  • Our upgrade project is called the 12 GeV CEBAF Upgrade Project.

    At the time CD-4A was achieved, we demonstrated 2.2 GeV per pass. This was 12 GeV! Well, not quite. In fact with more than one pass, we limited ourselves to a little more than 6 GeV with three passes, and to 10.5 GeV with 5.5 passes. It was not felt to be prudent to demand 12 GeV out of the machine immediately after turn on.
