  • When, in January 2016, I told Secretary Moniz that I would be standing down, he pointed out that he had done 100 months as director of Bates Laboratory at MIT and that I should at least match that. Coincidentally that would have also taken me to the end of Moniz’s term as Secretary of Energy. In fact, when I step down at the end of March it will have been 103 months at the helm, a very exciting period of my life.

I started my term as Director of Jefferson Lab on September 2, 2008.

  • Exploring the Nature of Matter

Scientists from across the country and around the world come to Jefferson Lab to advance mankind's understanding of the atom's nucleus. To probe nuclei, scientists use continuous beams of high-energy electrons from the lab's Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility, or CEBAF, as well as technologically advanced targets, unique particle-detection systems and ultra-high-speed data acquisition equipment in CEBAF's four experimental halls.

In modern parlance, the week of May 6, 2013 was something else!

We work hard every week, but there are some periods when the events all seem to land on top of each other. I was expecting the week of May 6 to be big, but it surpassed all expectations.
