  • NEWPORT NEWS, VA. – Or Hen spent six years studying how protons and neutrons interact inside the nucleus of the atom at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. Now, he’s been awarded the 2015 Jefferson Science Associates Thesis Prize for the thesis he wrote about the research.

    Hen studies protons and neutrons, collectively called nucleons. Specifically, he’s interested in those nucleons that interact with each other via short-range correlations.

  • NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The U.S. Department of Energy's Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility, or Jefferson Lab, is currently accepting applications for its science enrichment program for fifth-, sixth- and eighth-grade teachers of science.

    The after-school program is designed to increase teachers' knowledge of the physical sciences and to strengthen their teaching skills. It will run from September 2016 through May 2017 and is called Jefferson Lab Science Activities for Teachers, or JSAT.

  • NEWPORT NEWS, VA. – Today, City of Newport News first responders and staff at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility will participate in an emergency response exercise.

    The objective of the exercise is to provide a training opportunity for members of the lab community and for Newport News emergency responders. Local fire department personnel plan to participate in the exercise.

  • NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility will conduct the monthly test of its tornado warning siren at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, August 5. Depending on weather conditions at the time of the test, the siren could be heard by anyone within a 1.5-mile radius of the lab.

    The test will be carried out over a period that could last up to three minutes. The test will be of the wavering tone (also called high-low-high or 10-4-10).

  • Alice Perrin, a senior physics major at The College of William and Mary is the recipient of the 2014-15 Jefferson Science Associates Minority/Female Undergraduate Research Assistantship (JSA MFURA) at Jefferson Lab. Her assistantship project involves setting up a testing facility to measure the performance of 3D printed scintillators to be used in a particle detector.

  • The final match of the 2014 Virginia High School Science Bowl pitted Warwick High School, Newport News, against Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology, Alexandria, the long-standing Virginia Science Bowl champs. The team from TJHSST won the day and advanced to the national finals. A number of teams that didn't make it into the semi-finals participated in the Stay All Day design and engineering challenge.
