Sustainability

Jefferson Lab is a high-energy mission-specific facility and is significantly expanding its scientific and support facilities.

The expanded facilities will result in a significant increase in energy requirements. But the lab is committed to achieving a diverse set of sustainability goals.

These include Energy Utilization Intensity reduction, Renewable energy applications, Fleet Petroluem management, Advanced Energy Metering, LEED Gold certification compliance in new construction and major renovations, High Performance Sustainable Building compliance for existing facilities, and both Scope 1 and 3 Greenhouse Gas targets defined in Executive Order 13514.

Executive Order 13514 was issued by President Obama on Oct. 5, 2009.

The executive order provides a sustainability strategy for federal agencies that focuses on improvements in energy and economic performance. It also requires federal agencies to set a 2020 target for reductions in greenhouse gas emissions.
