James A. Turi, Jefferson Lab Site Manager
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has recently selected James A. Turi as the new Site Manager for the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility in Newport News, Virginia.
In his new position, Turi will be responsible for DOE programs and management of the Jefferson Laboratory Site Office, which oversees the administration of the contract with Southeastern Universities Research Association Inc. (SURA). SURA holds the performance-based contract with DOE to manage and operate the facility.
Jefferson Lab is a fundamental research laboratory devoted to the study of nuclear physics. The lab consists of a high-intensity, six billion-volt electron accelerator based on continuous wave superconducting radio frequency technology and a sophisticated array of particle detectors. The laboratory's scientific focus is on understanding how quarks, the basic building blocks of atoms, build up the matter of the world around us.
Turi began his federal career in 1968 with the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission. He has held a variety of positions involved in research and development, engineering and construction, facility operations and environmental cleanup. His experience spans nuclear and magnetic fusion energy to environmental management to the deployment of radioisotope thermoelectric generators for the NASA Galileo and Ulysses missions.
Turi most recently completed a temporary assignment as Acting Manager at Oak Ridge Operations and had been Acting Chief of Staff of DOE's Office of Science since March 2002. He previously served as the Acting Deputy Director for Operations for the Office of Science from June 2001 until March 2002. In that position, Turi was the point of contact within the Office of Science for field and laboratory management issues and concerns. His responsibilities included management and operational oversight of DOE's Chicago and Oak Ridge Operations Offices, the Berkeley and Stanford Site Offices, and their 10 associated laboratories. Jim joined the Office of Science as Associate Director for Laboratory Operations and Environment, Safety and Health in July 2000.
Under SURA's management, Jefferson Lab has become an international leader in experimental and theoretical nuclear and particle physics, accelerator physics, high-speed data acquisition, accelerator and detector engineering, and liquid helium cryogenics.
Turi is a 1968 graduate of the University of Massachusetts at Lowell and holds a Master of Science degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He is a registered Professional Engineer (Nuclear Engineering, California). Jim and his wife Gale are planning on living in Williamsburg, Va.
