Accelerator Seminar - Dr. Dali Gerogobiani: Radiation environment studies: from FRIB to FNAL

Radiation environment studies: from FRIB to FNAL

ABSTRACT

Two major accelerator facilities, Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB) at Michigan State University and Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (FNAL), present various challenges from the point of view of the radiation environment. In this talk, I present several examples of the radiation transport calculations for each of these facilities and describe the approach and tools for successful solutions of the problems. Examples include assessment of the radiation environment around the FRIB cryomodule test stand, shielding design for the target hall, tritium production and diffusion calculations, and skyshine calculations for the FNAL upgrade project PIP-II Beam Transfer Line collumators. Existing state-of-the-art radiation transport codes will be briefly discussed.
