Emergency Management
At Jefferson Lab an "emergency" is an unplanned event that (a) significantly disrupts normal operations or poses a serious threat to persons or property, (b) cannot be managed by routine response, and (c) requires a quick and coordinated response across multiple departments or divisions.
Potential emergencies could include the following events:
- Fire or smoke of unknown origin
- Explosion
- Toxic atmosphere
- Chemical spill
- Hurricane (site preparations and/or evacuation)
- Natural gas line rupture
- Violent wind storm or tornado (especially for trailers and less sturdy buildings)
- Bomb threat
- Earthquake
Preparing in advance for emergencies is the best way to minimize their impact. JLab has an extensive emergency management program, documented in the EH&S Manual, and many people here have active roles in emergency planning, assisting in periodic exercises and drills, and responding to actual events.
