  • One of my childhood heroes was Leonardo da Vinci. He represented so many things to me: an artist, a scientist and an inventor. I later learned that the step from scientist to inventor is an easy one. While I was never able to call myself an artist, I did manage to rightfully take on the mantles of scientist and inventor.  At Jefferson Lab, we are designing and performing experiments in new ways to revel the secrets of the matter that makes up our universe. The search for these treasures of knowledge takes many twists and turns.
  • Applications for the Science Graduate Student Research Program Being Accepted Through May 15 The Department of Energy recently announced that its Office of Science Graduate Student Research (SCGSR) program is accepting applications for the 2018 Solicitation 1 cycle. Applications are due by 5 p.m. Eastern Time on Tuesday, May 15, 2018.
  • Attendees Learn About New Technologies and Advancements NEWPORT NEWS, VA – When Canon Virginia (CVI) was putting together its External Technology Share event, it seemed natural to include neighbor, Jefferson Lab. On February 22, Jefferson Lab joined nine other companies and organizations invited to interact with CVI’s workers, engineers and leadership.
  • Physicians have long used CT scans to get 3D imagery of the inner workings of the human body. Now, physicists are working toward getting their first CT scans of the inner workings of the nucleus.

  • Christine Snetter, an architect with Jefferson Lab’s Facilities Management and Logistics department, was recently appointed to a second four-year term on the Virginia Board for Architects, Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors, Certified Interior Designers and Landscape Architects (APELSCIDLA).
  • I’m lucky.  I’m part of a team of scientists, engineers and technicians that have been asked by our country to seek better understanding of the universe. Besides getting new insights into the nature of our universe, the things we learn while conducting research help to make our lives better. I mentioned in an earlier post that basic understanding of the universe gained by probing the mysteries of the atomic nucleus has led to life-saving devices from small smoke detectors to large medical centers that treat cancer.
  • Charlottesville, Langley, and Maggie Walker High Schools Place at Annual Competition NEWPORT NEWS, VA – More than a dozen teams converged on Jefferson Lab bright and early on Feb. 3 for the Virginia Regional High School Science Bowl. At the end of an intense day of academic competition, the team from Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology, Alexandria, took home top honors.

  • Jefferson Science Associates is currently accepting nominations for the 2017 JSA Thesis Prize. For a thesis to be nominated, it must have been completed during calendar year 2017 or during the last quarter of 2016 (if not previously submitted), and it must be based on some aspect of the research program or science conducted at Jefferson Lab. The deadline for submitting nominations is 5 p.m. Eastern Standard Time on Feb. 16, 2018. A complete package requires:
  • Grant supports research associated with Jefferson Lab’s science program Calling all physics postdoctoral candidates: Now is the time to apply for the 2018 JSA Postdoctoral Prize, a $10,000 grant funded by Jefferson Science Associates, to support outstanding theoretical or experimental research work associated with the science program at Jefferson Lab.
  • On Jan. 11, Department of Energy Under Secretary for Science Paul Dabbar visited Jefferson Lab. While at the lab, he met several members of the lab’s senior leadership team, as well as members of the lab’s User Community and DOE Thomas Jefferson Site Office staff, and a number of the lab’s young scientists.
  • As a child, you probably remember being fascinated by everyday things: that shiny rock you kicked or that weird looking beetle that you saw darting around a porch light. Kids typically have many questions for their parents: Why do roly-poly bugs wrap themselves up like a ball? Why do we get sunburned? Where does rain come from?

  • Of Kevin Jordan’s 21 patents, more than half come from his work on boron-nitride nanotubes. Earlier this year, Jordan and his colleagues were recognized for their efforts by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration when it named BNNTs as its 2016 NASA Government Invention of the Year. “It’s an honor. Our work was chosen over the work of thousands of people at NASA,” Jordan said.
