Center for Theoretical and Computational Physics

This week, members of the Jefferson Lab Theory Center and Experimental Physics Division joined users in a dedicated workshop on γZ box corrections to parity-violating electron scattering. The workshop saw significant progress made towards a consensus about the size of the γZ corrections to the Q-weak experiment and, particularly, their uncertainties. These corrections are vital for understanding whether the Q-weak experiment is to achieve its goal of measuring the fundamental weak mixing angle of the Standard Model, sin2ΘW, to an unprecedented high level of precision.

Engineering

The central machine shop has completed the following work items:

  • Two stand assemblies for Arc 10, with associated brackets;
  • Two assemblies for the Free-Electron Laser diagnostic wire scanner;
  • 7,075 dies for multiple spoke superconductive cavity; and
  • "p" tubing for the Hall B Torus magnet mockup (for the SRF group).

The central machine shop is in the process of:

  • Machining tungsten sieve slit assemblies for Hall C; and
  • Manufacturing two Compton beamline corrector magnets for Hall C.

Overall, the shop has completed 103 work requests of various machining tasks for all areas of the lab.

Unplug Those Holiday Decorations
Everyone is reminded to turn off and unplug all electrical decorations when they depart work each day or by 6 p.m. In addition, all decorating materials must be resistant to fire, and only UL-approved lighting/electronics may be used.

Notable Event Notice: Dec. 16 Failure to Comply with Posted Signs
On Dec. 16, a GERT-trained subcontractor moved a Radiation Control group Controlled Area sign that was hanging on a fixed ladder to gain access to the area located directly above the Vertical Test Area. The signage was attached to the ladder by a magenta and yellow bungee cord, but the contractor did not pay attention to verbiage on the sign.

This area had been posted on Friday, Dec. 13, as the Superconducting Radiofrequency (SRF) group was scheduled to begin testing a cavity with a 1 Watt amplifier over the weekend. The contractors performed a walk-through of the site on Friday; however, they failed to take a look at this particular area.

Signs are posted to communicate important safety information. Please read and obey posted signs. If you are ever confronted with a sign that you question or don't understand, call the phone number on the sign to seek clarification. If a phone number isn’t listed on the sign, call the office, work group or person responsible for the sign. If you still have unresolved questions or concerns, contact your division safety officer or the safety warden for the area where the sign is posted. For more information, see the All-Staff Memo.

Copier Changeout to Occur in Early January
With the new contract for copier and printer services, all currently leased (rented) copiers will be replaced with updated Xerox models after the first of the year. All 30 of the leased convenience copiers will be replaced as follows:

  • CEBAF Center - Jan. 6
  • ARC, Support Service Center and Forestry Building - Jan. 7
  • Experimental Equipment Lab, Technology and Engineering Development Building, Test Lab and Radiation Control Group Buildings - Jan. 8
  • Trailer 35 and Buildings 85, 89, 97 and 203 - Jan. 9

The CNI group will strive to limit outages to a single copier at a time. Plan on using alternate copiers while the one in your area is down. If you have any questions or concerns, contact the IT Division Helpdesk, x7155.

Annual Holiday Bake Sale Set for Friday, Dec. 20
Quark Cafe staff invites the Jefferson Lab community to its annual Holiday Bake Sale on Friday, Dec. 20, 10:30 a.m.–1:30 p.m. The bake sale will be in the CEBAF Center lobby and will include a variety of breads, holiday cakes and pies by Gerry Fortin, owner of Lucille's Bakery in Richmond. A price list can be found on the lab's We Hear That page.

Pressure Systems Awareness Training Offered
Pressure Systems Awareness Training, SAF130A, will be held Jan. 8 at 11 a.m. in CEBAF Center room F113.  Registration is available through the Learning Management System. Additionally, Job Task Analysis (JTA) questions regarding pressure systems and safety hazards have been revised. In order for updates to reflect in your Skill Requirements List, your supervisor must go into the JTA and update the record. The updated questions are: Does this position require the operation, repair or design of a pressure or vacuum system? (SAF130A Pressure Systems Awareness); and Does the work involve stored energy or movement hazards (e.g. compressed gasses, magnets, robotics)? (MED01 Medical Monitoring for Hazardous Work, SAF104 Lock Tag and Try).

GEN034 Annual Security Awareness for Employees & Subcontractors
Each year, all employees and subcontractors are required to complete Annual Security Awareness training, GEN034. The GEN034 module is currently being revised and will remain unavailable until Jan. 2. Due to the delayed access to this module, the expiration date for the current period has been extended to Jan. 31. Training and Performance appreciates your patience as they work to update the training material. If you have any questions about training, contact Brandye Rogers, x5959, or Bruce Ullman, x7170.

Tracking Thomas at Jefferson Lab
Little Thomas is visiting all corners of the Jefferson Lab campus. If you can identify his location this week, email Kandice Carter with your guess. Guesses are accepted through Friday.

Kim Kindrew and Harry Fanning correctly guessed the location for Dec. 11. Honorable mentions go to Annie Ungaro, Silvia Niccolai, Michael Haddox-Schatz and Casey Heck. Check out Tracking Thomas on flickr for a better view of his last location and this week's new mystery photo.

JLab Weekly Briefs is an ongoing publication providing information on the status of safety, accelerator operations, experiments, free-electron laser, reviews, upcoming activities and special events. Deadline for submission is every Tuesday by 10 a.m. Submit new items to: Public Affairs or contact Kandice Carter at x7263.
