  • NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility will conduct the monthly test of its tornado warning siren at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 8. Depending on weather conditions at the time of the test, the siren could be heard by anyone within a 1.5-mile radius of the lab.

The test will be carried out over a period that could last up to three minutes. The test will be of the wavering tone (also called high-low-high or 10-4-10).

  • NEWPORT NEWS, VA. – The newly upgraded accelerator at the U.S. Department of Energy's Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility has delivered full-energy electrons as part of commissioning activities for the ongoing 12 GeV Upgrade project. At 4:20 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 14, operators of the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF) delivered the first batch of 12 GeV electrons (12.065 GeV) to its newest experimental hall complex, Hall D.

  • Our upgrade project is called the 12 GeV CEBAF Upgrade Project.

At the time CD-4A was achieved, we demonstrated 2.2 GeV per pass. This was 12 GeV! Well, not quite. In fact with more than one pass, we limited ourselves to a little more than 6 GeV with three passes, and to 10.5 GeV with 5.5 passes. It was not felt to be prudent to demand 12 GeV out of the machine immediately after turn on.

  • Nearly 50 current and former Jefferson Lab employees were recognized on Sept. 29, 2016, for inventions they created while carrying out their work at the lab – unique innovations that resulted in 39 patents.

  • NEWPORT NEWS, VA.  – Bill Rainey, an employee of Jefferson Lab was recognized by Secretary of Energy Ernest Moniz in Washington, D.C., on September 15.  Rainey received the Secretary’s Achievement Award for his work as part of a DOE committee to improve the effectiveness of the infrastructure that forms the foundation of the Department of Energy’s critical missions across the nation.

  • France and the French have been involved in this local area for a number of years. In 1781, the French Army, led by Compte de Rochambeau, helped the Continental Army of George Washington defeat the British in the Siege of/Battle of Yorktown. While my sentiments with respect to that event are mixed, I have no such equivocation with respect to Thursday’s event.

  • While participating in the Newport News Public School system’s 2016 SPARK program over the summer, staff from the Department of Energy’s Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility engaged students in team work, problem solving, and a deeper understanding of some math, science and engineering concepts – all while conducting a variety of hands-on activities and design challenges.
