    NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Today, the U.S. Department of Energy’s Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility has shipped the final new section of accelerator that it has built for an upgrade of the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS). The section of accelerator, called a cryomodule, has begun a cross-country road trip to DOE’s SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, where it will be installed in LCLS-II, the world’s brightest X-ray laser.

    NEWPORT NEWS – Operators of the primary particle accelerator at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility are getting a new tool to help them quickly address issues that can prevent it from running smoothly. A new machine learning system has passed its first two-week test, correctly identifying glitchy accelerator components and the type of glitches they’re experiencing in near-real-time.

  • Newport News, VA (March 23, 2020) – In an effort to minimize the risk to the Jefferson Lab workforce and in keeping with recommendations from national, state, and local authorities, the Department of Energy’s Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility is temporarily suspending operations. Shutdown procedures will begin Monday, March 23, bringing the lab to a safe and stable configuration by Friday, March 27. About 80% of the labs 720-person workforce began working remotely on March 17.

Sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy, the Science Bowl competition encourages students to excel in math and science, and to pursue careers in the science, technology, engineering and math fields.

  • Jefferson Lab will host the Virginia Regional High School Science Bowl for the 19th Year on Saturday, Feb. 1, 2020

    NEWPORT NEWS, VA – The National Science Bowl® has been sponsored annually by the Department of Energy’s Office of Science since 1991. Since its inception, more than 300,000 middle and high school students have participated in tournaments around the country. The competition is meant to encourage students to excel in math and science and to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and math. This event is free and open to the public and media.

    NEWPORT NEWS, VA – The Department of Energy’s Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility has revised the date for its next open house event. Now, Virginia’s national laboratory plans to open its doors to the public for its next biennial open house event on Saturday, Sept. 12. The free event will offer an opportunity for people of all ages to explore this world-class research facility.
