12 GeV Upgrade

Five superconducting spectrometer magnets and several large items of supporting infrastructure are needed for the new Super High Momentum Spectrometer (SHMS) in Hall C, with all of these items having multi-year fabrication times. The Q1 quadrupole magnet construction is in progress at the vendor. The remaining four magnets are in various stages of the procurement process. The vendor selection for the cryogenic control-reservoirs is nearly complete, and bids from several qualified vendors for the five large magnet power supplies are under evaluation. A detailed layout for shielding materials for the detectors’ Shield House is being developed and also is being incorporated into engineering drawings. Procuring the detailed drawing package is the last major step in advance of manufacture of the Shield House and Support Structure for the SHMS.

Confessions of a Converted Lecturer
Join Harvard University Professor Eric Mazur for a special workshop and open forum on Dec. 10, from 3-5 p.m., in the CEBAF Center auditorium. He will discuss how he adjusted his approach to teaching and how it improved his students' performance by helping them learn to understand the material instead of just memorizing it. The workshop is free and open to the public.

Accelerator

The accelerator ran well with high current (115 μA) to Hall A. On Dec. 1, the injector was set up to deliver beam with vertical polarization. Hall B was changed from pass 5 to pass 1. On Wednesday, after backing out the injector setup for the vertical polarization, Hall B was changed back to pass 5 and a spin dance was performed. On Friday, the position indicator of the vacuum valve at 1L06A failed and the faulty part was replaced.

Free-Electron Laser

FEL staff set up for additional tests of the grating optics this week. All of the instrumentation and mechanicals are working properly in the ultraviolet optical can that was installed two weeks ago. FEL staff continued work on the JLAMP Proposal, and a plan was established to replace the FL03 cryomodule with one that generates up to 55 MeV in January.

Theory Center

The important role of two-photon exchange (TPE) in electron-proton scattering has been revealed in a number of studies over recent years. In a new paper <arXiv:0911.3619 [nucl-th]>, the effects of TPE on the electromagnetic form factor of the pion have been computed, taking into account the finite size of the pion. Compared to the soft-photon approximation for the infrared divergent contribution, which neglects hadron structure effects, the corrections are found to be <1 percent for small Q² (Q²<0.1 GeV²), but increase to several percent for Q²>1 GeV² at very backward angles.

These have been updated to reflect the following revisions:

• Code stamping of applicable vessels is required.
• Vacuum vessel requirements have been clarified and expanded.
• Repairs and modifications are required to be made to the original construction codes (or sound engineering if none are known).
• Non-welding maintenance can be completed by competent technical staff.
• A Pressure Systems Committee Designee has been established whose responsibilities include providing PS identification numbers, assistance setting up folders and oversight of future inspections.
• A Peer Review is required up front if the pressure system is to be constructed to "equivalent measures"
• Inspection intervals are now determined and documented for each system.

End-of-Year Radiation Badge Change Out
The semi-annual dosimeter change-out will take place starting at 11 a.m. on Dec. 23. Everyone with a dosimeter (radiation badge) is asked to place it in its assigned rack before leaving JLab for the break. Anyone with questions may call Becky Mosbrucker, x7236 or page 584-7236.

Last Week for Key Validation
The validation of all JLab-issued keys ends on Dec. 16. All persons must validate the JLab-issued keys that they currently have in their possession. To begin the validation process, follow the link and complete the audit as directed. Jefferson Lab Open House Set for May 1, 2010
The 2010 Open House will highlight the latest physics research and technology developments at Jefferson Lab. Lab staff will be on hand to discuss their work, answer questions and provide scientific demonstrations throughout the day.

JAG Offers JLab Merchandise Through Online Store
The Jefferson Activities Group now provides the JLab community with the opportunity to purchase more than 30 different items with the JLab logo on it – directly from the JAG webpage. Items may be ordered individually or in larger quantities, and include short and long-sleeved shirts, cardigans, T-shirts, sweatshirts, a variety of hats and a soft-sided bag. Routine orders are delivered in about two weeks by UPS ground shipment. Holiday orders with payment received by Dec. 14 should be delivered by Dec. 23. Credit cards may be used to place orders on the webpage and over the phone. Checks are also accepted, but must be received by the vendor prior to merchandise shipment.
 
Peninsula Foodbank Thanks JLab Community for Food Drive Donations
JAG conducted a food drive during November to support the Foodbank of the Virginia Peninsula. More than 915 pounds of non-perishable food and $60 in monetary donations were collected and delivered to the foodbank on Nov. 20. JAG and the foodbank extend thanks to the JLab community for the great response.
