12 GeV Upgrade

On July 30, DOE convened an Energy Secretary Acquisition Advisory Board (ESAAB) meeting which resulted in the approval of Critical Decision-4A for the 12 GeV CEBAF Upgrade project. This very important milestone marks the completion of the accelerator and civil portions of the project necessary to mark the transition to initial operations of the 12 GeV facility. This decision was supported by the important accelerator commissioning milestones achieved in spring 2014. The attention of the 12 GeV Project Team will now be focused on Hall D beam commissioning this fall, and on completing the physics experimental equipment in Halls B and C by September 2017.

Engineering

The Machine Shop is presently manufacturing or continuing to manufacture:

• Core extensions and core modification for the CX, CW and CV family of dipole magnets;
• Hall C Super High Momentum Spectrometer sieve slit vacuum box assembly is complete and waiting to be assembled;
• Two DL corrector magnets;
• New mirror box assembly for Hall A;
• GlueX commissioning target assembly for Hall D;
• A 1 nanoAmp beam position monitor and current monitor girder;
• The Heavy Photon Search vacuum chamber and hex cell support for Hall B;
• VC Coupler assembly for the SRF group; and
• Various small machining jobs for multiple lab customers

Facilities Management and Logistics

CEBAF Center A & C Wing Restrooms to Close Temporarily for Refurbishment
The men's and women's restrooms in CEBAF Center, Wings A and C, are being refurbished to replace dilapidated partitions, lavatories and counters. The restrooms will be closed while refurbishment work is underway. The work will be done in two phases:

Phase I includes Wing A restrooms on the first and second floor.

Phase II includes Wing C restrooms on the first and second floor.

Phase I work is set to begin on Monday, Aug. 11, and should be completed within four weeks. Phase II work is planned to begin immediately thereafter and should take about the same time. Notification will be made in advance of the start date for Phase II.

Notices will be placed on the restroom doors while they are closed. The notices will include locations of other restrooms. The anticipated project completion date for all phases is late September. Facilities Management appreciates your patience during this brief inconvenience, as we work to provide safe, sanitary and upgraded restrooms.

Resolving ES&H Concerns
To ensure your welfare and productivity, Jefferson Lab has several mechanisms for employees, or anyone who comes into contact with the lab, to report issues potentially affecting the safety of workers, visitors, lab neighbors or the environment without fear of retaliation or reprisal. ES&H Manual Chapter 2310 lists a variety of mechanisms for resolving and reporting ES&H concerns and for preventing similar concerns from occurring in the future.
Here is a list of the options you have for resolving an ES&H concern:

• If possible, resolve the ES&H concern yourself.
• If you are unable to resolve the concern yourself, refer the concern to your supervisor  and management chain using the mechanisms outlined here.
• You may also consult your Safety Warden, Division Safety Officer, your representative to the Worker Safety Committee, or contact an ESH&Q staff member directly for any ES&H concerns you may have.
• If you would like to remain anonymous, or if you feel that it is more appropriate, use Jefferson Lab’s Employee Concerns Program.
• If one or more of the above steps have not resulted in resolution of the concern, or if you feel that it is more appropriate, you may also use the formal DOE Employee Concerns Management System hotline at 800-676-3267.

The DOE DPO process ensures that all JSA employees and contractor employees have the right to report environment, safety, and health technical concerns that have not been resolved through routine work processes.

Once your concern has been addressed, communicate any lessons learned to your staff, co-workers, supervisors and your Division Lessons Learned Coordinator. ES&H Manual Chapter 2310 offers more information on concern resolution.

Computing and Networking Infrastructure

Central Computing Outages Set for Saturday, Aug. 16
The CNI group is planning an outage of the central computing infrastructure on Saturday, Aug. 16, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. During this time, there will be intermittent outages of various central services while major upgrades and reconfiguration is performed on the central computing infrastructure. All services will be back up and stable by 5 p.m. If you have any questions or concerns regarding this outage, contact the IT Division Helpdesk at helpdesk@jlab.org or x7155.

Red Cross Blood Drive Set for Aug. 19
The next American Red Cross Blood Drive is scheduled for Tuesday, Aug. 19, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. in CEBAF Center, Room F113. The American Red Cross is appealing for donations due to an eight percent decline over the past three months. The dip represents about 80,000 fewer donations than the organization was expecting at this time of the year, and it could lead to an emergency situation in August. New and repeat donors are encouraged to attend. Appointments and walk-ins are welcome. To schedule an appointment, contact Johnie Banks, x7539. The linked page lists all eligibility requirements.

TIAA-CREF Financial Education and Retirement Planning Resources
Jefferson Lab's investment service provider, TIAA-CREF, now offers multiple financial and retirement planning webinars covering a range of topics to assist you with planning and saving for retirement. Each webinar averages about 30-45 minutes in duration and is offered at no cost to the employee. In addition, TIAA-CREF continues to offer multiple resources for employee retirement planning to all regular and term employees.
