12 GeV Upgrade

As the 12 GeV upgrade project nears the commissioning phase for Halls B and C, the last of the scheduled modules of the Accelerator Readiness Review (ARR) is scheduled for Jan. 9 and 10. The ARR committee is charged with determining if Jefferson Lab is prepared to deliver beam for the commissioning and operation of Experimental End Stations (Halls) B and C, and the experimental equipment associated with the 12 GeV Upgrade Project, in a safe and efficient manner. To this end, both halls are continuing with the installation of the remaining magnets, detectors, beamline components and associated infrastructure/services.

In Hall B, the Central Time of Flight has been placed on the mock-up support stand, and installation is underway. Hall B also continues working the various detectors’ gas delivery systems and remaining utilities. Hall C has installed the beamline supports and continues with hookup of the Q3 and dipole magnets.   

Physics

Hall A
Hall A completed the planned run for the "DVCS" and "GMp" experiments E12-06-114 and E12-07-108, Measurements of the Electron-Helicity Dependent Cross Sections of the Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering with CEBAF at 12 GeV, and Precision Measurement of the Proton Elastic Cross Section at High Q2. This marks the completion of the first experimental effort using the 11 GeV beam in the hall.

Hall C
In Hall C, all of the new Super High Momentum Spectrometer magnets have arrived, and the hall is in the installation and testing phase in preparation for first beam this spring.

Publications Training and Refresher Course Offered
Start the New Year off right and brush up on the JLab Publications Process! JLab must submit the final, peer reviewed, accepted manuscripts to the Department of Energy. Visit the website for information on how to do this and/or R.S.V.P. to attend the next Publications Training and Refresher course on Wednesday, Jan. 11, at 2 p.m. in CEBAF Center room F224-225. In this session, authors will learn how to submit manuscripts to the Publications Review and Approval System, how to make recommended revisions to papers during the signature process, and how to add the relevant information once the paper is published. If you will attend, notify Kim Edwards by Tuesday, Jan. 10.

L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science Program Applications Due Feb. 3
The L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science program recognizes and rewards the contributions women make in STEM fields and identifies exceptional women researchers committed to serving as role models for younger generations. More than 2,250 women scientists in over 110 countries have been recognized since the program began in 1998. In the U.S., the program awards five postdoctoral women scientists annually with grants of $60,000 each. Applicants are selected from a variety of fields, including the life and physical/material sciences, technology (including computer science), engineering and mathematics. Applications for the program are now open and are due on Friday, Feb. 3. The application and more information can be found at the link.

Nominate A Colleague for the 2017 Outstanding Nuclear Physicist Award
JSA is now accepting nominations for the 2017 Outstanding Nuclear Physicist Award, which recognizes individuals who have made outstanding and sustained contributions, including technical achievements, to experimental and/or theoretical research related to the nuclear physics program at Jefferson Lab. The biennial award consists of a certificate and a $10,000 honorarium, presented to the honoree at the Jefferson Lab Annual Users Group meeting. Deadline for submissions is Jan. 31, 2017. Center for Theoretical and Computational Physics

A new method for computing hadronic matrix elements from lattice QCD has been introduced, which has the potential to improve systematic errors on the ground state matrix elements from excited state contamination. The method may therefore offer a solution to a practical problem that has plagued lattice QCD calculations of hadronic matrix elements for some time. As a benchmark calculation, the nucleon axial charge has been computed at a single lattice spacing with a pion mass of 310 MeV.

Resolving ES&H Concerns
To ensure the welfare and productivity of its workforce, Jefferson Lab has several mechanisms for employees, to report issues potentially affecting the safety of workers, visitors, neighbors and the environment, without fear of retaliation or reprisal. ES&H Manual Chapter 2310 ES&H Concern Resolution lists a variety of mechanisms for resolving and reporting ES&H concerns. Here is a list of the options for resolving an ES&H concern:

• If possible, resolve the ES&H concern yourself;
• If you are unable to resolve the concern, refer the concern to your supervisor or management chain;
• Consult with your Safety Warden, Division Safety Officer, a representative of the Worker Safety Committee, or contact an ESH&Q staff member directly;
• If you would like to remain anonymous, or if you feel that it is more appropriate, use the Jefferson Lab Employee Concerns Program;
• If one or more of the above steps have not resulted in resolution of the concern, you may also use the formal DOE Employee Concerns Management System hotline at 800-676-3267; or the DOE Differing Professional Opinion Process.

Once your concern has been addressed, communicate any lessons learned to the Jefferson Lab Lessons Learned Coordinator.

Jefferson Lab to Test Tornado Warning Siren at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 6
Jefferson Lab's tornado warning siren will undergo its monthly operational test at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 6. Don't respond to the siren; this is a test of the siren system and not a personnel response exercise. Individuals planning to be in the Central Materials Storage Area (where the siren is located) while the test is taking place must have with them and wear two layers of hearing protection. Jefferson Lab’s Site-Wide Alert (SWA) system (email, page, and Cisco phone text messages) will be used to remind the lab community the morning of the test.

Red Cross Blood Drive Scheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 24
The next American Red Cross Blood Drive will take place Tuesday, Jan. 24, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. in CEBAF Center room F113. New and repeat donors are encouraged to attend. Volunteers Sought to Help with Engineering/STEM Career Days on Feb. 23-24
Jefferson Lab will be participating once again in the Engineering/STEM Career Days on Thursday, Feb. 23, and Friday, Feb. 24, 2017, 8 a.m.-1 p.m., at Newport News Shipbuilding. Science Education is seeking engineers, scientists and technicians who are willing to talk to high school students about their careers. The day is formatted as such: The high school students will rotate through four preassigned tables, each staffed by one of our JLab volunteers. For each 15 minute rotation, our staff will talk about their careers, backgrounds, etc. Upon completion of the final rotation, students will stay at that table to participate in a design challenge (which Science Education will provide). Then event will conclude with lunch! If you are interested in volunteering or have questions, contact Brita R. Hampton at hampton@jlab.org by Wednesday, Jan. 25. Volunteers may sign up for one day or for both days.

Reminder: 2017 General Access RWP Available for Review and Signature
The 2017 General Access Radiological Work Permit (SAF801kd) is available for signature. If you are a radiation worker at Jefferson Lab, you must read and electronically sign the new RWP by Jan. 6 to retain your accelerator site access. This year’s RWP contains new restrictions/policies. Be sure to read this document in its entirety. You may access this document from off-site. The document can be found on the web-based training page. Sentara Mobile Mammography Unit On-Site January 13
The Sentara Mobile Mammography Unit will be here at Jefferson Lab on January 13, 2017, 8:30 a.m.-3 p.m. It will be stationed in the ARC parking lot. Mammography detects breast cancer, and The American Cancer Society recommends that women with an average risk of breast cancer should undergo regular screening mammography starting at age 45. It only takes 15 minutes! This service is open to all employees as well as their family members or friends, since personal health insurances will be billed. D&I Council Seeks Jefferson Lab Community Input
Lab Director Hugh Montgomery and the D&I Council are asking for your input on a survey to assess awareness of the value of diversity and inclusion following the last year of effort in this area at Jefferson Lab.
