    What: Accelerators: Driving Applications for Society

    Jefferson Lab's technology stewardship event offers a unique opportunity to hear the many ways that accelerators, originally developed for research, can now be used to address national and international priorities, including Environmental Cleanup, Advanced Materials for Industrial Applications, Medicine and Health, Alternative Energy, and National and Homeland Security.

  • Washington, DC – Jefferson Sciences Associates (JSA) announced the award of $400,000 to support projects related to education, outreach and career development to staff and users at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (Jefferson Lab).

    Jefferson Lab, located in Newport News, VA, is a world-leading nuclear physics research facility. More than 1,600 scientists from around the world use the lab’s unique particle accelerator to conduct experiments to expand our understanding of the visible universe.

  • The OARtrac® system, built with detector technologies used in nuclear physics, has been cited as a 2018 R&D 100 Award Winner by R&D Magazine.

    NEWPORT NEWS, VA – The OARtrac® system, built by RadiaDyne and including technologies developed by scientists at the U.S. Department of Energy's Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility, has been awarded a 2018 R&D 100 Award by R&D Magazine.

  • Jefferson Lab Director Stuart Henderson has been appointed a Governor's Distinguished CEBAF Professor.

    NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Stuart Henderson, director of the Department of Energy's Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility, has been appointed the Governor's Distinguished CEBAF professor at Old Dominion University. The position is supported by the Commonwealth of Virginia and is named for the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility, which is the main research facility located at Jefferson Lab.

  • Cristiano Fanelli has been awarded the 2018 JSA Postdoctoral Prize for innovative solutions in optimizing particle detectors.

  • Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology wins 23rd Virginia Regional High School Science Bowl competition

    NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology continued their winning streak at the 23rd Virginia Regional High School Science Bowl competition on Feb. 3. The U.S. Department of Energy's Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility hosted the in-person event for the first time since 2020.

  • Jefferson Lab to host in-person Virginia Regional Middle School Science Bowl competition

    NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Members of the media are invited to observe portions of the Virginia Regional Middle School Science Bowl on Saturday, Mar. 2, 2024.

    What: The U.S. Department of Energy’s Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility will host the Virginia Regional Middle School Science Bowl competition at Jefferson Lab,12000 Jefferson Ave., in the CEBAF Center Auditorium.

  • Regularly scheduled tornado siren test for March 1 has been canceled 

    NEWPORT NEWS, VA –  The U.S. Department of Energy’s Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility has canceled the monthly test of its tornado warning siren this week. Instead, the lab will participate in the Virginia Statewide Tornado Drill scheduled by the Virginia Department of Emergency Management (VDEM) for March 7 at 9:45 a.m.  

  • Jefferson Lab Special Topic Fellowships

    APPLICATIONS ARE OPEN For 2024

    The EIC Center at Jefferson Lab, EIC2, is pleased to announce opportunities for graduate and post-doctoral fellowships.

    These fellowships will be awarded to fund coming to Jefferson Lab to research a special topic.  The current areas of research include theory, simulations, detectors, and computing as they relate to the EIC, Positrons or the proposed JLab 22 GeV upgrade. Each fellowship will provide travel to Jefferson Lab, housing and a per diem for a typical stay of ten weeks at the lab.

    Eligible students must be enrolled full-time in a relevant doctoral program. Postdocs must have a full-time position with a relevant university or laboratory research program. . The awardees may not concurrently hold another major full-time fellowship or internship.  The award is limited to once a year though awardees can reapply for an additional year.

    To apply, a research plan must be provided according to the guidance provided below. The plan should be written by the applicant together with their university or laboratory advisor. The plan should contain clear goals and deliverable to be accomplished by the end of the Fellowship visit.   Working with a Jefferson Lab staff member is encouraged. 

    The applications will be evaluated on an ongoing basis according to the following criteria:

    • Merit and quality of proposed research
    • Relevance of the proposed research to the Electron-Ion Collider, Positron Program and/or 22 GeV Upgrade
    • Likelihood that the proposed research can be successfully accomplished within the Fellowship period.
    • Letters of recommendation.

    The following application will be reviewed on an rolling basis.

    • Proposed research plan as described above. Maximum 3 pages with 11-point type.
    • CV of the candidate
    • At least one letters of recommendation is strongly encouraged
