    NEWPORT NEWS, VA. – A young researcher, who worked on software development and data analysis for a major physics experiment conducted at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility, has received an award for the thesis he wrote about his efforts.

  • Late in the evening on May 7, Jefferson Lab staff successfully threaded the electron beam up the new beamline toward Hall D for the first time.

    NEWPORT NEWS, VA. – The Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF) at the U.S. Department of Energy's Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility has achieved the final two accelerator commissioning milestones needed for approval to start experimental operations following its first major upgrade.

  • Newport News, Va. – A project team at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility – or Jefferson Lab – recently received a DOE Secretary’s Achievement Award for creating a new building complex that will advance the lab’s unique capabilities in superconducting accelerator, particle detector and cryogenics technologies.

    With this award, the Energy Department recognized the outstanding efforts of the team that planned and managed the construction of Jefferson Lab’s Technology and Engineering Development Facility (TEDF).

  • NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The U.S. Department of Energy’s Jefferson Lab will hold a public open house on Saturday, May 17, from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. It is the once every-other-year opportunity to spend the day exploring this world-class research facility, says Deb Magaldi, lab spokesperson. “The open house offers the public the best opportunity to see much of the lab and to find out about the many types of research and technological advancements underway here.”

  • NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility will sound its tornado warning siren at 9:45 a.m. on Tuesday, March 11. This test is being conducted as part of the Tornado Drill being sponsored by the Virginia Department of Emergency Management.

    Depending on weather conditions at the time of the test, the siren could be heard by anyone within a 1.5-mile radius of the lab.

    The test will be carried out over a period that will last three minutes. The test will be of the wavering tone (also called high-low-high or 10-4-10).

  • NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Elementary- and middle-school teachers interested in learning new and innovative methods for teaching the physical sciences are invited to attend the annual Region II Teacher Night, scheduled for Wednesday, April 2, at the Department of Energy's Jefferson Lab.

  • NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Some of the brightest young minds in the Commonwealth will meet at the Department of Energy's Jefferson Lab on Saturday, March 1, to compete in the Virginia Regional Middle School Science Bowl. Teams from 16 middle schools are registered for this year's academic competition.

  • What: Virginia Regional Middle School Science Bowl

    When: Saturday, March 1, 2014. Round robin competition runs from 9 a.m. - noon. The double elimination, semi-final and finalist rounds run from 1:30 - ~ 4 p.m.  Awards presentations will be made immediately after the final round.
