Susan Fisher-Hoch, a virologist and epidemiologist from the University of Texas School of Public Health will present: Studying Deadly Diseases.

Newport News, Va. - The Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility is installing a severe weather warning siren on its campus and will test the system for the first time on Tuesday afternoon, Dec. 6. Depending on weather conditions at the time of the test, the siren could be heard by anyone outdoors within a 1.5-mile radius of the lab.

NEWPORT NEWS, VA. - A Jefferson Lab scientist has received a prestigious national award from the U.S. Department of Energy that recognizes his leadership role in research and development in support of the department and its missions.
Matt Poelker, a scientist with Jefferson Lab's accelerator division, was one of just nine winners of a 2011 Ernest Orlando Lawrence Award. Each winner receives a gold medal, a citation and $20,000. They also will be honored at a ceremony in Washington, DC, early next year.

When: Saturday, Feb. 4, 2012. Round robin competition runs from 9 a.m. - noon. The double elimination, semi-final and finalist rounds run from 1:30 - ~ 5 p.m. Awards presentations will be made immediately after the final round.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Some of the brightest young minds in the Commonwealth will meet at the Department of Energy's Jefferson Lab on Saturday, Feb. 4, to compete in the Virginia Regional High School Science Bowl. Teams from 22 high schools from across the region are registered for this year's academic competition.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Very few people can claim being the first to see a new state of matter. Sarah Phillips wants to join those select few. Today, Phillips got one step closer to that goal when she was named the recipient of the 2012 JSA Postdoctoral Research Grant at the U.S. Department of Energy's Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility.

NEWPORT NEWS, VA. - A new study has shown that adding boron-nitride nanotubes to the surface of cancer cells can double the effectiveness of Irreversible Electroporation, a minimally invasive treatment for soft tissue tumors in the liver, lung, prostate, head and neck, kidney and pancreas. Although this research is in the very early stages, it could one day lead to better therapies for cancer.

Newport News, Va. - The Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility will test its tornado warning siren at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, May 4. Depending on weather conditions at the time of the test, the siren could be heard by anyone outdoors within a 1.5-mile radius of the lab.
The test will be carried out over a period that could last from 30 seconds to three minutes. The test will be of the wavering tone (also called high-low-high or 10-4-10).

Cynthia Keppel has been named Group Leader of Jefferson Lab's Experimental Hall A. Keppel will begin her duties on July 1.
