JLAB History Archives Project

2013

Hermann Grunder and CEBAF History Files: An initial large collection of records had been retained in the Experimental Equipment Lab's Records Holding Area. This consisted of approximately 32 record-sized (1 cubic foot) boxes filled with items that were in the file cabinets of Hermann Grunder, Beverly Hartline, and other notable staff members. All of these boxes were transferred to an office on the third floor of the CEBAF Center F-wing where Kim Kindrew could have space to do pre-processing work. With her new added responsibilities of JLAB's archivist, Kim devoted time removing staples, discarding non-record material and duplicate material. After a year, the boxes were transferred to the ARC library's conference room where they were further processed, indexed and placed into archival clamshell document boxes and placed into the archives room.

2014

A student intern: The CEBAF History Project hired its first student intern, Paul Judd, in December, 2013. Judd had just received his Master's in Archives from San Jose State University, and processed Nathan Isgur's papers during his three months working from a cubicle in the library.

A grant proposal: During Kim's visit to Fermilab, she discovered that the AIP Neils Bohr Library and Archives, and Center for History in Physics, offers a grant to archives. With assistance from Larry Cardman and Kandice Carter (Public Affairs), a grant proposal was drafted and submitted to the AIP in August 2014. In September, the lab learned that it had received a $10,000 award from the AIP, and the lab matched the grant funds. It was determined that hiring a person to process the large volumes of paper in the library's archives room was top priority. A job search began.
