The Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility will conduct the monthly test of its tornado warning siren at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 2. Depending on weather conditions at the time of the test, the siren could be heard by anyone within a 1.5-mile radius of the lab.
The test will be carried out over a period that could last up to three minutes. The test will be of the wavering tone (also called high-low-high or 10-4-10).

For the third time in its history, Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility is home to one of the world’s 500 fastest supercomputers. The SciPhi-XVI supercomputer was just listed as a TOP500 Supercomputer Site on November 14, placing 397th on the 48th edition of the list of the world’s top supercomputers.
The Top500 list was announced Monday, Nov. 14, at The International Conference for High Performance Computing, Networking, Storage and Analysis, SC16, in Salt Lake City. It’s announced semi-annually and is comprised of systems that are ranked according to their computation speeds as determined by the LINPACK Benchmark, which is a calculation of a linear system represented by a large double precision dense matrix.

Ed Douberly, JLab’s Fire Protection and Access Control manager, recently received a letter from the State Dept. extending its deep appreciation for firefighting advice Douberly provided to help extinguish a dangerous sulfur fire set by ISIL terrorists in Mishraq, Iraq. Douberly drew from his years of experience and knowledge to provide advice critical to safely extinguishing the blaze and keeping coalition forces out of harm's way while they battled the fire.

Nearly 50 current and former Jefferson Lab employees were recognized on Sept. 29, 2016, for inventions they created while carrying out their work at the lab – unique innovations that resulted in 39 patents.
On hand to applaud their efforts were SURA President and CEO, Jerry Draayer; PAE Chief Operating Officer, Karl Williams; Lab Director Hugh Montgomery and other members of lab leadership. Draayer and Williams are vice chairs of the JSA Board of Directors.

NEWPORT NEWS, VA, October 13, 2016 – Bill Rainey, an employee of Jefferson Lab was recognized by Secretary of Energy Ernest Moniz in Washington, D.C., on September 15.  Rainey received the Secretary’s Achievement Award for his work as part of a DOE committee to improve the effectiveness of the infrastructure that forms the foundation of the Department of Energy’s critical missions across the nation.

Most of the Montage articles I have posted have addressed a single subject. This is different; I have a number of subjects I will try to cover which characterize the current menu of activities at the Lab.
We ran CEBAF during May to provide data for the proton radius (PRAD) experiment, and indeed completed the experiment. During the summer period, we limit operations to benefit from the electricity charge structures provided by Dominion Power. It has become traditional to concentrate on remedial and maintenance work. A good example is the next step in the gradient maintenance program. The refurbishment of one of the cryomodules by the teams in the SRF Institute has been completed and the module tested. Today, this module has been installed in the CEBAF tunnel, and there is every expectation that it will contribute significantly to the gradient capability of the machine.

Or Hen spent six years studying how protons and neutrons interact inside the nucleus of the atom at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. Now, he’s been awarded the 2015 Jefferson Science Associates Thesis Prize for the thesis he wrote about the research.
Hen studies protons and neutrons, collectively called nucleons. Specifically, he’s interested in those nucleons that interact with each other via short-range correlations.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The U.S. Department of Energy's Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility, or Jefferson Lab, is currently accepting applications for its science enrichment program for fifth-, sixth- and eighth-grade teachers of science.
The after-school program is designed to increase teachers' knowledge of the physical sciences and to strengthen their teaching skills. It will run from September 2016 through May 2017 and is called Jefferson Lab Science Activities for Teachers, or JSAT.

NEWPORT NEWS, VA. – Today, City of Newport News first responders and staff at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility will participate in an emergency response exercise.
The objective of the exercise is to provide a training opportunity for members of the lab community and for Newport News emergency responders. Local fire department personnel plan to participate in the exercise.
