Dear Qualified Electrical Workers,

On Tuesday, Feb. 7 at 1 p.m., I am hosting a very important and timely meeting for all Qualified Electrical Workers to discuss the recent electrical event at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, as well as the improved and ongoing safety initiatives at the lab. While this meeting is mandatory and in-person attendance is preferred, a hybrid meeting option will be offered. A recording of the meeting will be made available for future reference. QEWs who also attended the Jan. 27 supervisor meeting are required to attend this meeting, as additional information about the SLAC event and electrical safety will be discussed.

Those that attend the meeting in person will be given the opportunity to be entered into a raffle for the black Jefferson Lab baseball cap (10 will be awarded). Additionally, if you completed the lab’s most recent Inclusion Survey, you will also be given the opportunity to pick up your thank you item for participating at the end of the meeting.

SUBJECT: Management Safety Discussions - Mandatory Meeting
CONTACT: Bob May at may@jlab.org, Bill Rainey at wrainey@jlab.org

Dear Lab Supervisors,

First, I want to thank you for your attention to safety, and the support you’ve shown for the many improvements we have implemented in recent years. We continue to look for opportunities to enhance our safety posture and as a result, we are hosting a mandatory hybrid meeting at the lab, on Friday, Jan. 27 at 2 p.m., for supervisors to discuss several safety topics, including our appreciation for your help in implementing these changes after experiencing our own notable safety event in 2019. Most importantly, we would like to hear your questions and comments about safety at the lab.

The specific topics we will cover are our lab’s safety expectations, the updated tool to facilitate and document management safety discussions, connecting with lab staff about safety, and finally, the lessons learned and path forward after the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory event.

As part of this discussion we will cover a new safety-focused initiative being launched internally to help supervisors regularly connect with lab staff through conversations about working safely, called “Management Safety Discussions.”  We are not reinventing the wheel – over 500 people at the lab have entered more than 18,000 safety conversations or issues in our current safety observation tool over the last 15 years. We listened to you about how we can make the tool better, coupled with reviewing our safety events, and evolved the tool into the management safety discussion tool and process. You’ll hear from Johnathon Huff, Bob May, Andrei Seryi and myself during this important event.

Here are the details:

What: Management Safety Discussion & SLAC Safety Event Review
When: Friday, Jan. 27 at 2 p.m.
Where: CEBAF Center Auditorium and via Zoom
Who: Supervisors of full-time JSA staff members

This hybrid meeting will be recorded to reference in the future. Currently this meeting is invitation-only for JSA supervisors.

For a brief overview, I invite you to visit our Management Safety Discussion webpage here. There you’ll find training materials, a list of frequently asked questions, a collection of messages on the topic from this point forward, and a direct link to the Management Safety Tool.

Thank you for your attention to this.

Sincerely,
Stuart
