Historical Sketch

CEBAF/Jefferson Lab produced two newsletters: CEBAF News and On Target, with the latter being the successor to the former. In 1996, CEBAF News was renamed to On Target, a name suggested by Elizabeth Sarrett. Staff member Debbie Magaldi was responsible for getting On Target developed and printed. These newsletters highlighted advancements, discoveries and happenings within the Lab and Department of Energy that affected Jefferson Lab. The newsletters also updated users and staff of the Lab of future events and changes.

The January/February 2006 edition was the final print; after that, On Target was migrated from a print newsletter to digital with digital distribution until December 2014. There is presently a 'weekly brief' transmitted to all Jefferson Lab community members (including users) produced by Kandice Carter. For issues that are available digitally beginning in February 2000, please visit: https://www.jlab.org/news/ontarget/archive

Scope and Content

From in-house publications to inclusion in the more broad Department of Energy publications, this collection houses works that were published to disseminate information about Jefferson Lab to other institutions as well as the users and staff that are on-site.

The earliest publication from the Lab was the CEBAF News, beginning in 1987. This publication was a newsletter that transitioned to the On Target newsletter in 1996. These were disseminated approximately monthly. The CEBAF News and On Target newsletters are available within the archival holdings.

Running oftentimes in concert with the newsletter were weekly publications that updated the larger Lab audience of project updates; these were the Blue Sheets (called so because they were printed on blue paper and placed in staff members’ mailboxes weekly 1990-1996), On Target Briefs (2001-2006), and JLab Weekly Briefs (2006-2007). In 2007, the online Jefferson Lab Weekly began its run and is the current method of dissemination of information site wide. These weekly publications are available in the Jefferson Lab digital archives.

Arrangement

Composing physical as well as digital facets, this collection is divided into four series:

Series I: CEBAF. Contains CEBAF News and OnTarget. These two publications were by and for the staff and users of the Jefferson Lab (and prior to 1996, CEBAF) community. They were semi-regular publications with at least 4 distributed a year, usually more often than that. There are seven issues/editions missing from this collection body: (1996) August and September; (1997) February; (1998) March, April, May, June. All other editions are present and available for researchers.

Series II: SURA. These are publications that originated with the Southeastern Universities Research Association, to keep member-institutions abreast of what was going on within the SURA community.

Series III: Other. Aside from including the Institutional Plans from 1998 – 2008, this section if primarily composed of in-house publications for various departments and divisions.

Series IV: DOE. Publications pertaining to or mentioning Jefferson Lab that originated within the Department of Energy are within this series.
