  • Jefferson Lab Laser Twinkles in Rare Color


    NEWPORT NEWS, VA, Dec. 21 - December is a time for twinkling lights, and scientists at the Department of Energy's Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility are delivering. They've just produced a long-sought, rare color of laser light 100 times brighter than that generated anywhere else.


  • Probing the Proton's Weak Side

    Scientists know that the sun gets its shine through the actions of a little-understood fundamental force of nature called the weak force. But there’s a lot that they don’t know about the weak force. So for the first time, researchers at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Jefferson Lab are trying to precisely measure the weak force's grasp on the ubiquitous proton.

  • NEWPORT NEWS, VA. - The fastest computer system in Hampton Roads has booted up with more than 100 Teraflops of processing power. Located at the Department of Energy's Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility, the cluster computer system was recently upgraded with video game components to assist scientists in modeling the smallest bits of matter in the universe.
                                                   


  • Dr. William F. Brinkman, Director of the Department of Energy's Office of Science, addressed Jefferson Lab staff on the Office of Science perspective during his visit Monday.


  • The new calorimeter, called BigCal, contained 1,744 lead glass bars, such as the one shown, for detecting the scattered electrons.

  • Jefferson Lab Sets Sept. 1 Groundbreaking for $73.2 M Facility


    NEWPORT NEWS, Va., Aug. 31, 2010 - The U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility will hold a groundbreaking on Sept. 1 to inaugurate the construction phase of its new $73.2 million Technology and Engineering Development Facility, or TEDF.

  • NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The U.S. Department of Energy's Jefferson Lab is currently accepting applications for its science enrichment program for fifth-, sixth- and eighth-grade teachers of science.
    The program, designed to increase teachers' knowledge of the physical sciences and strengthen their teaching skills, runs from September 2010 through May 2011 and is called Jefferson Lab's Science Activities for Teachers, or JSAT, program.
    The after-school program builds teachers' skills in the physical sciences, according to Lisa Surles-Law, program administrator.
