Newport News, Va. - The U.S. Department of Energy's Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility has awarded the contract for providing the components of its next major cluster computer installation to Koi Computers, a woman-owned, certified Small Disadvantaged Business located in Lombard, Ill. Koi won the $1.1 million contract with its bid to provide 432 dual processor, dual core computer nodes.

Some of the brightest young minds in the Commonwealth will meet at the Department of Energy's Jefferson Lab on Saturday, Feb. 10, to compete in the Virginia Regional High School Science Bowl. Nineteen teams, representing high schools from across the region are participating in this year's academic competition. - Jefferson Lab will host two Spring Science Series lectures during February 2007. The first event is set for Tuesday, February 20, and will feature David Powars, with the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), discussing the Chesapeake Bay Impact Crater. He will share with the audience, recent research from a core hole more than a mile deep in the central zone of this 35.5-million-year-old impact crater buried beneath the lower Chesapeake Bay and how it is still affecting the region today.

- NEWPORT NEWS, VA. -- Michael Haddox-Schatz, a computer programmer at the Department of Energy's (DOE's) Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility, out-coded more than 20,000 participants to win a spot in Google's Global Code Jam 2006 Championship Round. Out of 100 finalists, Haddox-Schatz is one of just seven savvy programmers from the United States set to take part in the October 27 finals in New York City.

The first presentation, "When Stars Attack!" is Oct. 17 and features Dr. Brian Fields from the University of Illinois. He will explain how he is using radioactive sea sludge as a telescope to dredge up the evidence of a near-Earth supernova explosion.
