Celebrating Mental Health Awareness

On Tuesday, May 21, at 2 p.m., join us for an engaging event featuring Dr. Kristie Norwood (she/her), a licensed clinical psychologist who currently serves as the Director of the Student Counseling Center at Hampton University. Dr. Norwood has served as the Assistant Chief of Psychology at the Hampton Veteran Affairs Medical Center, where she led the posttraumatic stress disorder clinical team, collaborated in the development of the women’s mental health clinic and served as the director of the postdoctoral training program. As the founder of ReMIND U, a non-profit dedicated to decreasing the stigma of mental health, Dr. Norwood brings a wealth of experience and passion to lead a valuable discussion on mental health in the workplace. 

 

DEIA Book Club

Join the DEIA Book Club, a space for colleagues to come together to explore stories, gain new perspectives and foster meaningful discussions. On Thursday, May 2, at 2 p.m., we will explore chapters 3-6 of “Crucial Conversations: Tools for Talking When the Stakes Are High, Third Edition,” a selection of the DOE’s DEIA, Training and Organizational Development Division, via Zoom.

Zoom featuring Dr. Morénike Giwa Onaiwu (she/they), an autistic educator and global advocate who identifies as nonbinary. As the founder of Advocacy Without Borders, a nonprofit organization dedicated to human rights, justice and inclusion, Dr. Onaiwu brings a wealth of experience and passion and will provide valuable insight into neurodiversity and autism acceptance. At Jefferson Lab, we stand proud in fostering an inclusive and supportive environment where everyone can represent themselves authentically. We uplift and amplify the voices of our transgender community to ensure visibility. This week, we reaffirm our commitment to creating an environment where vulnerability is embraced, and learning is encouraged. Just Desserts

Just Desserts-Women in Innovation & Inventorship: Thursday, March 14, at 3:00 PM in CC Room L102 and via Teams

RTPO and the DEIA Council will host a special Just Desserts Innovation Series event focused on amplifying and supporting women in innovation. Join the event for a lively conversation with panelists Michelle Shinn of the DOE Office of Science, the lab’s Anne-Marie Valente, and Nancy Mortar of Canon Virginia on breaking down the barriers and assumptions women face in business and innovation. The panel will discuss both easy and challenging ways that mentors, allies and systems can promote more innovation activity by women through patenting, entrepreneurship and continuous improvement efforts. Light refreshments will be served. 

DEIA Book Club

The DEIA team is thrilled to announce the launch of the lab’s new DEIA Book Club, a space for colleagues to come together to explore stories, gain new perspectives and foster meaningful discussions. The first book the club will read is “Crucial Conversations: Tools for Talking When the Stakes Are High, Third Edition,” a selection of the DOE’s DEIA, Training and Organizational Development Division. HBCU Spirit Day: Tuesday, February 20, 2024 @ 12:00 PM in CEBAF Center. 

Get connected with your colleagues for a visual celebration honoring our Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) on Tuesday, Feb. 20, at noon in the CEBAF Center atrium! You're encouraged to proudly showcase your support for HBCUs by wearing your HBCU spirit gear, such as t-shirts, hats and sweatshirts featuring HBCU logos, for a group photo at noon. Bring your lunch, stay and connect with colleagues if you have time!

Martin Luther King Jr. Day: Monday, Jan. 15, 2024

On behalf of the DEIA council, we express our gratitude for the enduring impact of Martin Luther King Jr., who dedicated his life to justice, equality, and civil rights. Commemorating MLK Day is an opportunity to acknowledge the transformative legacy of Dr. King. This year, we hope you have the opportunity to actively engage in a learning activity, whether watching a program on TV, attending a local event or participating in discussions within our community. May we continue to let this day serve as a catalyst for ongoing conversations and actions that support Dr. King’s dream for unity and justice.
