The Metrology Alignment group has developed a number of software packages to maximize the efficiency of alignment tasks. Accelerator alignment is unique in that it combines two disciplines: industrial metrology and high precision geodesy.

The Mechanical Systems Department provide a variety of design, engineering, technical, and fabrication services that support the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (TJNAF), a world leading nuclear physics research facility, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy. The Mechanical Systems Department is comprised of the Alignment & Metrology Group, Installation/Vacuum Group, the lab Machine Shop, Mechanical Engineering Group (with mechanical design services), and Document Control. These groups are utilized lab wide and service CEBAF, the Experimental Halls, and the SRF Institute, as well as Work for Others in support of other DOE National Labs.

The Jefferson Lab Survey and Alignment Group is responsible for the positioning and alignment of beam line components in the CEBAF accelerator, experimental halls and the Low Energy Recirculator Facility (LERF). In addition to the positioning of beamline elements, the group's activities include the inspection, fiducialization and pre-alignment of various accelerator and experimental components. The group uses a variety of equipment and techniques, from laser trackers and portable measurement arms to traditional jig transits and coordinate measuring machines.
